So you want to dance (become a dancer). Imagine yourself with a huge circle of people, wide open floor, a great song and loud cheers. People are taking turns showing their moves on the dance floor. Each person that gets on the dance floor shows their stuff and the energy around everyone gets bigger and bigger.

Everyone is continuing to get more excited. You get a tap on your shoulder to go out and show some of your moves. You are feeling the song and the roaring atmosphere.

You get on the floor and show your moves and the crowd goes nuts; you just added to the vibe of the gathering (or party). Wait what’s that you say? “You don’t dance” or “you’re not quite sure if you can.” But you “want to dance.”

Everyone who explores dance starts somewhere. The question is where does this journey begin? Well that might be  a loaded question (a dance class maybe?). But I got a video that will point you in the right direction.

So let’s go through each step quick as a little review. You have a positive attitude, you’re willing to put yourself out there and you have confidence. You also have a good sense of rhythm, some flexibility, good handle of repetition, a mirror to check things out and someone to reference for early progress.

To top it all off, you have chosen music to dance to and what style you’ll start of with. You my friend are well on your way. After you have cultivated the right mindsets, checked and practiced your fundamentals and chose a dance style, you’ll be high on your way to become a dancer, and in due time, a great one. Wishing you the best with your dance journey.

Here are some resources related to some of the tips/steps mentioned that will further help you:

For mindset: check out these posts on growth and passion.

For fundamentals check out these videos on warming up and stretching. By Dana Alexa and Jesse La Flair. And also a nice playlist of videos by VincaniTV.

And also look up dancers: Jabbawockeez, Ian Eastwood, Michael Jackson, Mike Song, Koharu Sugawara, Kathryn McCormick, Tight Eyez, and Lyle Beniga for good inspiration and an early model for you to get you going. And even better if you can meet and take classes with some of the people mentioned.

For choice I could suggest some music to get you going or a style of dance to start with. But it is just that a choice, one that you have to make yourself. You’ll know what music that will get you going when you hear it and you’ll know in your heart and gut what dance style you want to learn. You just to have to take action to make the right moves to make you move!
